Saugatuck Township Seeks Community Input on Housing Needs Through Survey

|
Press Releases

Saugatuck Township is calling on residents, business owners, and stakeholders to participate in a Housing Survey designed to shape the future of housing in the community. The survey is a key component of a larger initiative aimed at addressing local housing challenges, updating township policies, and enhancing housing opportunities for current and future residents.

West Michigan is experiencing increasing housing demand and development pressures, and the Saugatuck/Douglas area is no exception. In response, Saugatuck Township is undertaking a comprehensive analysis of housing needs, demographic trends, and regulatory conditions to create a clear and actionable implementation plan.

This effort will result in strategic updates to the township’s zoning ordinances and policies to support greater housing production while aligning with community priorities.  Depending on community input, these changes could be related to parking minimums, shared parking, floor area ratios, unit sizes, and more. The completed plan will also provide several action items related to site development options, housing typologies, and available incentives, resulting in specific changes to the township’s zoning and policies.

“Saugatuck Township is working to ensure our housing future meets the needs of all residents. By participating in the Housing Survey, residents can help shape a strategy that balances growth with community values,” said Daniel DeFranco, Saugatuck Township Manager.

This initiative is made possible by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s (MSHDA) Housing Readiness Incentive Grant Program, which supports local governments in adopting land use policies, updating master plans, and implementing zoning amendments that promote housing availability and affordability.

Residents are encouraged to complete the Housing Survey, available on the Saugatuck Township website and Facebook page. The survey will remain open until Friday, March 21. For more information, please visit ww.saugatucktownshipmi.gov or contact info@saugatucktownshipmi.gov.
