Property Assessments

Property Assessing

Property assessments help ensure that taxes are distributed fairly and accurately across the community. Saugatuck Township’s assessing process follows Michigan law and is designed to reflect the true value of property while maintaining equity for all taxpayers.

How Property Assessments Are Determined

The Township Assistant Assessor, Kelly Jellison, MAAO, MCPPE, determines the assessed value of property using statistical analysis, market data, and property-specific information. All assessments are conducted in accordance with the General Property Tax Act (PA 206 of 1893, as amended) and Proposal A.

Accurate property values are essential to ensure:

  • Fair distribution of property taxes
  • Proper tax and debt limits
  • Correct allocation of state, county, school, and local funding

When values are current and equitable, the system functions as intended for both property owners and public services.

Understanding Your Property Assessment Notice

Each year, Saugatuck Township mails Assessment Change Notices to property owners. While these notices can be easy to overlook, they contain important information about your property’s assessed and taxable values.

This notice explains how your property was assessed for the current year and whether any changes were made. Reviewing it carefully helps you understand how your property taxes are calculated and ensures the information on file is accurate.

What to Look For on Your Notice

  • Current and prior assessed and taxable values
  • Any changes made to your property assessment
  • Instructions and deadlines for appealing an assessment, if applicable

If you have questions about your notice or need help reviewing it, the Township assessor is happy to assist you.

Property Records & Ownership Information

The Assessor’s Office maintains property record cards for all parcels in the Township. These records track:

  • Current ownership
  • Land transfers, splits, and subdivisions
  • Parcel characteristics and improvements

This information is used to develop accurate assessment rolls, land value maps, and economic condition factor (ECF) studies for Saugatuck Township, Allegan County, and the Michigan State Tax Commission.
