Riverside Drive & Dugout Road Watermain Project

Riverside Drive & Dugout Road Watermain Project

Saugatuck Township is constructing a new watermain to replace a nearly 100-year-old, two-inch water line on Riverside Drive. The project replaces the existing two-inch line with 2,400 feet of eight-inch diameter public watermain along Riverside Drive and Dugout Road, improving water quality and supply for residents.

Identified as a priority by Kalamazoo Lake Sewer and Water Authority (KLSWA) in 2001, this water line replacement is a critical project for safeguarding water quality. The aging two-inch line serves 22 properties but runs through a pond, creating a potential contamination risk if a break occurs. Its small size, dead-end design, and challenging location also hinder maintenance.

In addition to upgrading the line, the project will replace lead service lines, complete system loop, provide fire protection, and support a future municipal well.

Allegan County provided $350,000 towards the completion of this project.

  • The existing 2” galvanized pipe is over 100 years old and poses a health risk due to its age and unknown materials.
  • This project will provide 22 properties with access to a new water main that meets EPA and State standards, eliminating private wells and reducing contamination risks.
  • Supported by EGLE and Kalamazoo Lake Sewer and Water Authority, this long-awaited replacement is a system priority.
  • It will replace 10% of the Township’s lead service lines and improve water quality by eliminating dead-end mains.
  • The new line will improve fire protection and exceed ISO/Fire Code standards for residential fire flow.
  • It will also enhance water supply by connecting to a future municipal well that will serve the Township and the Cities of Saugatuck and Douglas, and Laketown Township.
