Natural Gas Outage

Natural Gas Outage Information for the Tri-Community Area

This page provides updates related to the current natural gas outage affecting the Tri-Communities, specifically for customers serviced by Michigan Gas Utilities. Below you’ll find the latest status updates and tips for staying safe and warm.

For the most current information, please follow Allegan County Emergency Management and Saugatuck Township on Facebook.

LAST UPDATE FROM MICHIGAN GAS UTILITIES:

Please contact MGU Directly with any questions.
Michigan Gas Utilities (MGU) has visited all customers in Allegan County who lost service last week. Crews have restored service to more than 80% of customers and left information for the remaining customers who were not at home.
On Monday, utility crews are again going door to door to the remaining customers who were not available during the first visit.
We believe there are hundreds of homes that are summer homes or second homes where the customer may not be regularly available. In those cases we would ask the homeowner to work with a trusted neighbor to let our crews access the home to restore service and relight appliances.
MGU is keeping extra crews in the area this week to help restore service to the remaining customers as quickly and safely as possible.
The MGU pipeline lost natural gas service on April 9 when the natural gas transmission pipeline line that serves MGU was damaged.
The transmission pipeline operator, TC Energy, worked around the clock to repair the damage to their pipeline. The damage was caused by a third party unaffiliated with MGU or TC Energy.
Service was restored to the MGU pipeline on April 11. Utility crews have been working around the clock since the initial incident to safely secure the MGU distribution system and restore service to the 5,200 customers impacted.
We appreciate customers’ patience and all of the kind words and gestures from the community. From the thank you messages and hand waves to food and water drop offs, we are grateful.

UPDATE from Michigan Gas Utilities – April 13, 2025

We have restored gas service or visited more than 60% of customers who lost service this week. Crews will visit the remaining customers’ homes and businesses today. We know you may be getting questions about timelines, and please let people know we appreciate their patience. This is a full on effort, we are getting to each customer as quickly as possible.

We still have our full 200+ people from across the Midwest working on the effort.

All the work has been done safely and the kind gestures from the community has been truly remarkable. More than a few people have mentioned that, even though they are working 16 hours each day, they will leave this effort with a few extra pounds because of all the food and treats!

UPDATE: Michigan Gas Utilities working to safely restore service

A major natural gas outage is affecting approximately 5,200 Michigan Gas Utilities (MGU) customers in Allegan County, including those in the Tri-Community area. The outage was caused by damage to a natural gas transmission pipeline operated by ANR on Wednesday, April 10. The damage halted the flow of gas into MGU’s system.

Restoration Timeline and Process:

  • ANR is currently working to repair the transmission line. Due to the nature of the damage, service restoration may take several days.
  • MGU and utility crews from across the Midwest—including We Energies, Wisconsin Public Service, and Minnesota Energy Resources—are assisting with restoration.
  • Restoration requires two visits to each affected property:
    1. First, crews must turn off service at the meter of every affected home and business.
    2. Once the ANR pipeline is repaired and gas flow resumes, crews will return to turn service back on and relight all natural gas appliances to ensure they are functioning safely.

What Customers Should Do:

  • Update your contact information via the MGU app or your My Account section at www.michigangasutilities.com to receive direct updates about restoration progress.
  • Do not turn off gas at your appliances. Gas is no longer flowing into MGU’s pipeline, so customer action is not required at this time.

Natural Gas Leak & Outage Information

Michigan Gas Utilities (MGU) has confirmed a widespread natural gas outage affecting approximately 5,200 customers across the Tri-Community area. The outage stems from a major transmission line leak reported earlier this afternoon in the Fennville/Clyde Township area.

According to MGU:
“Natural gas is no longer being supplied to the MGU pipeline due to damage to the transmission line that serves our system. MGU is working closely with the transmission pipeline operator to restore service as quickly and safely as possible. However, due to the extent of the damage, full service restoration may take several days.”

Allegan County Emergency Management is actively coordinating with the American Red Cross to assess community needs and identify appropriate warming centers or shelter options.

Please continue to monitor official channels for updates and safety guidance.

Staying Warm: Safety Tips

Indoor Heating Tips

  1. Dress in Layers
    • Wear multiple layers of lightweight clothing, and don’t forget hats, gloves, and warm socks.
  2. Close Off Unused Rooms
    • Keep doors shut to concentrate warmth in commonly used areas.
  3. Use Heat Sources with Caution
    • Electric Space Heaters: Place on flat surfaces, away from flammable materials. Plug directly into outlets (no extension cords).
    • Fireplaces or Wood Stoves: Use only if they are properly vented and never leave them unattended.
  4. Seal Drafts
    • Use towels, blankets, or draft stoppers to insulate windows and doors.
  5. Cover Cold Floors
    • Lay down rugs or blankets to help retain warmth underfoot.

What NOT to Do

  • Do not use generators indoors. Always place them outside, away from windows and vents.
  • Do not use gas ovens or stovetops for heat—this poses a serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Do not burn charcoal or use propane heaters indoors.
  • Avoid turning off gas to appliances or your home, as it may complicate system repressurization when service is restored.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

  • Be alert for symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, or weakness.
  • If symptoms occur, get to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Stay connected: Charge cell phones and keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio on hand.
  • Check on neighbors: Especially elderly residents or those with special needs.
