Saugatuck Township Hall Restoration to Create ‘Community-Centric’ Space
Exterior renovations will feature modern and welcoming exterior façade and site improvements
Saugatuck Township Hall, centrally located in the heart of the Saugatuck Township’s principal business corridor at, 3461 Blue Star Highway, will undergo exterior restoration in 2025 to complement the interior renovations that took place in 2023.
On Wednesday, Oct. 9, the Saugatuck Township Board unanimously approved hiring Grand Rapids-based Progressive AE for architectural and landscape services for the project based on the redesign steering committee’s recommendation. Progressive AE will act as the general contractor and coordinate all subcontractors for the project.
“For decades, the Saugatuck Township Hall has been located along our area’s busiest thoroughfare – Blue Star Highway. However, despite passing it daily, many residents remain unaware of the hall’s existence due to lack of visibility,” said Saugatuck Township Manager Daniel DeFranco. “We want to leverage the Hall’s central location on Blue Star Highway and create a modern and welcoming façade with a site design that contributes to the township’s goal of creating a walkable, neighborhood corridor and showcases the township’s commitment to sustainable development.”
Originally built as a multi-unit commercial building in 1976, the 4,000-square-foot building became Saugatuck Township Hall in 1993. The facility also houses Saugatuck Township’s administrative offices and currently hosts a leased Michigan State Police satellite office.
In 2023, the Township Hall underwent significant interior renovations, featuring a new main entrance, a state-of-the-art conference room, an updated reception area, and the installation of a much-improved audio/visual system. The new exterior updates will include building façade and curb appeal improvements, a clear and accessible entrance, safety and accessibility enhancements, signage and wayfinding improvements, and parking and lighting updates. Sustainable design elements, such as solar installations, EV charging stations, and green stormwater infrastructure, will also be incorporated.
“The façade update and site development aim to transform Saugatuck Township Hall into a modern, accessible, and community-centric space that contributes to the broader vision of a thriving Blue Star Highway Corridor and showcases sustainable development practices,” said DeFranco.
The public is invited to attend a presentation of the recently completed Blue Star Corridor Safety Plan on Wednesday, October 23 at 5:30pm at the Saugatuck Township Hall. Click here for more information.
