Saugatuck Township Hall to Undergo Major Exterior Renovations

|
Press Releases

Renovations are set to begin March 30 with expected completion by July

Saugatuck Township Hall is getting a significant exterior upgrade that will transform the space into a more welcoming, accessible, and pedestrian-friendly community hub along the Blue Star Highway Corridor.

The 4,000-square-foot building, located at 3461 Blue Star Highway, will receive a clearly defined, accessible entrance, resurfaced façade, updated exterior lighting and new Township signage. A covered walkway canopy wrapping around the building will be the focal point of the transformation. Additionally, the parking lot will be relocated to the rear of the building, the front lot will be converted into a pedestrian plaza, and a rain garden, drought-tolerant landscaping, and new trees will be added to enhance the site.

“After years of planning and collaboration, we initiated an interior redesign of Township Hall in 2023 to create a more professional environment that better serves the needs of the community,” said Saugatuck Township Manager Daniel DeFranco. The interior project included: essential updates to structural, mechanical, and electrical systems, along with professional workspaces for staff, accessibility improvements, technology upgrades, and enhanced safety measures. “With the inside now complete, we are excited to begin work this spring on the exterior to reflect the Township’s long-term goal of creating a walkable, connected Blue Star Highway Corridor that supports housing, mixed-use development, and improved pedestrian infrastructure.”

Built in 1976, Saugatuck Township Hall shares building space with Michigan State Police. MSP will continue to share space in the Saugatuck Township Hall building. The 2026 facelift will be the first renovation to the building’s exterior since being built 50 years ago.

Overall cost of the project is about $1.5 million. Funding for the exterior renovations comes from the Township’s capital project fund and a $185,000 rehabilitation and placemaking grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

“These upgrades build on community input, guidance from the Lakeshore Disability Network, and the Township’s vision for creating a pedestrian-friendly space that is inclusive, resilient and environmentally conscious,” DeFranco said. “By prioritizing accessibility and sustainability, such as featuring native, drought-resistant and pollinator-friendly plantings, green infrastructure with improved stormwater retention capacity, and dark-sky compliant lighting, we are creating a public gathering space that reflects our stewardship to both the community and environment.”

Township Hall renovations are scheduled to begin on March 30, weather permitting, and expected to be complete in July. Progressive Companies is the architect and general contractor for the renovation.
