Riverside Drive & Dugout Road Watermain Project
Riverside Drive & Dugout Road Watermain Project

Saugatuck Township constructed a new watermain to replace a nearly 100-year-old, two-inch water line on Riverside Drive. The project replaced the existing two-inch line with 2,400 feet of eight-inch diameter public watermain along Riverside Drive and Dugout Road, improving water quality and supply for residents.
Identified as a priority by the Kalamazoo Lake Sewer and Water Authority (KLSWA) in 2001, this water line replacement was a critical project for safeguarding water quality. The aging two-inch line served 22 properties but ran through a pond, creating a potential contamination risk in the event of a break. Its small size, dead-end design, and challenging location also hindered maintenance.
In addition to upgrading the line, the project replaced lead service lines, completed the system loop, provided fire protection, and supported a future municipal well.
Allegan County provided $350,000 toward the completion of this project.

- The existing 2-inch galvanized pipe was over 100 years old and posed a health risk due to its age and unknown materials.
- This project provided 22 properties with access to a new watermain that met EPA and State standards, eliminated private wells, and reduced contamination risks.
- Supported by EGLE and the Kalamazoo Lake Sewer and Water Authority, this long-awaited replacement was a system priority.
- It replaced 10% of the Township’s lead service lines and improved water quality by eliminating dead-end mains.
- The new line improved fire protection and exceeded ISO/Fire Code standards for residential fire flow.
- It also enhanced the water supply by connecting to a future municipal well intended to serve the Township, the Cities of Saugatuck and Douglas, and Laketown Township.
