Douglas Cemetery Prairie Restoration

Douglas Cemetery Prairie Restoration

In Spring 2024, Saugatuck Township, following Township Board approval in December 2023, partnered with the Outdoor Discovery Center (ODC) to restore portions of the Douglas Cemetery into a thriving native prairie landscape. This project enhanced the site’s natural beauty, supported local wildlife, improved sustainability, and honored the historic character of the grounds.

Project Overview

As part of the master planning efforts for the Douglas Cemetery, a prairie restoration project was proposed for 8.58 acres of land not plotted for grave sites. Additionally, a 2.4-acre area designated for future grave sites was treated for invasive species management.

Project Benefits

The restoration project was designed to:

  • Improve cemetery aesthetics with native grasses and wildflowers
  • Create habitat for pollinators and other wildlife
  • Provide meditative walking trails for visitors
  • Enhance stormwater drainage and soil health
  • Preserve the historic and natural character of the cemetery grounds

Why It Matters

Prairie restoration strengthens the environment by improving biodiversity, reducing invasive species, and naturally managing water. It also creates a peaceful, reflective space for the community while ensuring the cemetery remains both functional and beautiful for generations to come.
